Monkeybay Backpackers is situated in the heart of Ballito Village on the Dolphin Coast in KwaZulu Natal. We are a short 1-minute walk from the main beach and some of the best Surfing on the North Coast. The lodge is tastefully decorated in a rustic and artistic way giving our guests the true African experience. Thanks to loads of indoor and outdoor space, nothing will cramp your st yle during your stay. In fact, the relaxed atmosphere is a little addictive so don’t be surprised if you end up staying longer than planned.
Monkeybay Backpackers has become a landmark in Ballito and a fantastic tourist destination. We are 12 minutes from Durban International Airport so getting here is quick and easy. Ballito’s village atmosphere is a great escape from the hustle and bustle of the city life, yet it offers everything you will need to enjoy your stay. The traveler is spoilt for choice when it comes to dining when staying at Monkey Bay. Ballito offers a variety of restaurants, including Seafood, Italian, French and Portuguese, if you are looking for a more laid back experience there are plenty coffee shops, cafes and takeaways.
Imagine walking to the beach early in the morning, surfboard under your arm and catching the first wave of the day. They waves are so good its home to the Mr. Price Pro, the 5 star rated World Tour Event that attracts locals and Internationals alike every July.
We at Monkeybay firmly believe in supporting a variety of charities, which include the Vervet Monkey program as well as the Aids Orphans program. We invite the children from the Aids Orphans program to spend a weekend at Monkey Bay and teach them to surf. It’s a great time for everyone involved.

Adventure in Ballito
Ballito Beaches - The beach and the surf is the main attraction for most visitors to Ballito. Enjoy everything from swimming in beaches that are protected by shark nets to popular surfing spots and tidal pools.
Beach Front Promenade Take an afternoon stroll along the scenic beach front promenade that meanders along the coast line for 2.5 km.
Surfing Ballito offers some of the best surfing on the North Coast. Salmon Bay, Clark Bay, Willard’s Beach, Thompson Bay, Salt Rock and Tiffany’s are re-known for great wave action.
Salmon Bay offers both left and right hand point breaks working off east and south swells respectively. Jutting out slightly into what is known as ‘the Wild Side’ it is one of the last spots to be affected by the onshore north easterly.
Willard’s Beach
A fast, hollow right-hander that breaks just off the rock north of Ballito Main Beach. Works best in a southwest swell and on a low tide. Watch out for the rips and prepare for constant paddling on a big swell.
Cage Diving Pioneers in Soft Cage Shark Diving. In the warm waters of KZN Natal, different species of shark can be found on our Cage Dive like Blacktip Sharks, Dusky Sharks and Spinner Sharks. There is even an option of getting out of the shark cage for a true shark experience.
